International Day of the Girl was declared by the United Nations in 2012 as a day to raise awareness of girls rights around the world to be celebrated every year on October 11th.

So this year I celebrated! Full disclosure, I went to an girls high school.

Memunatu Magazine hosted a celebration at the DC office of Google. The magazine aims to promote literacy, leadership, and empowerment for teenage girls in West Africa through a classroom magazine. The magazine hosted an event titled 'empowering innovation' in honor of International Day of the Girl on Tuesday, October 11th.

The event was comprised of networking and an all female panel offering advice on how to be a successful woman in the world.

The panel was led by Nina Oduro, founder of AfricanDevJobs. And these women on the panel shared their insights: Monica Jahan Bose an artist and activist, Yawa Hansen-Quao founder of Leading Ladies Network, Katie Riley manager of She's the First, and Laura Almonacid of BeGirl.

At the end of the discussion Nina asked each woman to describe female innovation in one word to recap the evening's theme.

Energy, women have the energy- Monica Jahan Bose

Spanx, it's practical and solves the problem - Yawa

Defying expectations, that's two words- Katie

Creativity, can bring you anywhere- Laura
